The wood cycle · Stage 4 of 4

    Maintenance

Reviving wood over time, without starting from scratch.

    Care and prevention

Wood that is cared for regularly never needs to be stripped back to bare wood. All it takes is stepping in before the protection gives way: when the colour fades or the surface loses its sheen, that is the right moment.

Prevention costs less, in time and in product, than redoing the whole cycle from scratch. Window and door frames, garden furniture and exotic woods are the ones that need it most.

    Products for this stage

    Base
    Where you use it

Same job, two bases. For this stage the range is solvent-based.

    At work

How it's applied, in the hands of those who do it every day.

    • Close-up of vertical old wooden boards with pronounced grain, cracks and old iron nails
    • Woman brushing a protective varnish onto an outdoor wooden table
    • Hand applying a brown wood stain with a flat brush to a vertical fence board
    • Close-up of a wooden panel varnished in amber and walnut tones, with natural visible grain

    Mistakes to avoid

    • Waiting for the wood to crack

At that point reviving is not enough: you have to start again from the preparation.

    • Switching products without checking

Not all products are compatible with the existing finish.

    • Cleaning with harsh detergents

They damage the protection that maintenance is meant to preserve.
